n Barnesville: Robin Tracey, environmental education specialist, will lead a shine-only Spirit of Tuscarora trail dog hike at 12:30 p.m. Friday at Tuscarora State Park. The trail is 4.5 miles and rated moderate. Dogs are welcome but must be leashed and get along with pets and other people. Participants will meet at the upper beach parking lot. Franklin Klock, program assistant at the Carbon County Environmental Education Center, will present "Eagles: Power and Majesty," at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Locust Lake State Park Amphitheater. He will discuss an array of items about eagles and have an American Bald Eagle. The program is free but donations will be accepted to benefit the Eagle Fund and the Carbon County center. For more information, call the aforementioned phone number between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. At 1 p.m. Saturday Tracey will lead the Long Loop Hike on the Crow, Lake View and Spirit trails at Tuscarora State Park, an eight-mile trek rated moderate. Participants will meet at the Crow Trail parking lot off Tuscarora Mountain Road and should bring a bag lunch and water. The hike is dog friendly but all pets must be leashed and get along with other pets and people. The trek will be canceled in the event of inclement weather. n Harrisburg: The state Department of Transportation driver license and photos centers will be closed Friday in observance of the Independence Day holiday, according to a PennDOT press release. Customers may still obtain a variety of driver and vehicle products and services online through PennDOT's Driver and Vehicle Services website - www.dmv.state.pa.us. Driver and vehicle online services are available 24/7 and include driver's license and photo ID renewals, vehicle registration renewal, driver-history services, changes of address, driver license and vehicle registration restoration letters, and exam scheduling. There are no additional fees for using online services. A complete listing of PennDOT driver and photo license center closings in 2011 is available on the website under "News, Stats and Facts." In the release, PennDOT also reminded motorists they can log on to 511pa.com or call 511 from any phone to check traffic conditions before heading out.
n Summit Station: The Vraj Temple, 51 Manor Road, will stage a 30-minute fireworks display beginning at 8:45 p.m. Saturday in celebration of the 238th Independence Day. In a press release, the temple said neighbors are asked to confine cattle and horses to barns. Parking at the Vraj is limited to 200 vehicles. However, the fireworks will be visible even from north of Summer Hill, according to the release.
n Shenandoah: An ice cream social, sponsored by First National Bank to benefit the revitalization group Downtown Shenandoah Inc. and Pottsville-based Avenues, is set for 5 to 8 p.m. July 23 at Mountain Valley Golf Course, Barnesville. There will be an auction of items, including the first six quarts made of Yuengling Ice Cream Black and Tan. The cartons are numbered and were donated by Yuengling for the fundraiser. George Blum, Pottsville, has donated his services as the auctioneer. The cost to attend is $10. DSI is leading the Shenandoah downtown revitalization effort and Avenues, formerly United Cerebral Palsy, supports people with special needs. Avenues also runs Expressions, a thrift/gift shop at 112-114 N. Main St., Shenandoah. It carries multiple items including clothing, accessories, housewares, furniture, DVDs, CDs, movies, decorations, new gifts and other fare.
n Valley View: The Valley View Fire Company's first golf tournament has a 1:30 p.m. tee-off July 19 at Hidden Valley Golf Course, Pine Grove. Registration will begin at noon. The cost is $75 per golfer, which includes 18 holes of golf, green fees, riding cart, lunch, dinner and chances to win prizes. There will be awards for longest putt hole, longest drive, closest to the pin, last place, pot of gold. The firefighters hope the tournament will become and annual event.
