Board approves increases in pay

Williams Valley School District staff will receive pay increases for the upcoming school year.

The school board June 11 approved a $1,750 increase for administrators; $1,750 for other contracted employees; and a 50-cent hourly increase for classified employees who have worked a full year with the district.

Directors David Ferraro, James Monger and Christopher Stroup abstained on the contracted employee raises. Board member William Smith was absent.

Under the pay hikes, the salaries of the following administrators with the increase will be: Superintendent Diane R. Best, $113,322; Federal Program Liaison Brian Pipech, $87,350; High School Principal Christine Duey, $83,000; Elementary Assistant Principal Judy Schappe, $70,250; Business Manager Amy Tomolavage, $72,000; Special Education Supervisor Joseph Gorham, $81,750; and Technology Director Helen Kohr, $80,350.

In other business, the board approved:

• Hiring Matthew Haas as the marching band director for the 2020-21 school year at a salary per the collective bargaining agreement.

• The Williams Valley School District flexible instructional day application for implementation beginning the 2020-21 school year through the 2022-23 school year, upon approval by the state Department of Education.

• Appointing Brian Pipech as the district’s pandemic coordinator.

• Accepting a quote from All American Athletics for $23,500 to resurface the high school gym floor and $1,800 to recoat the elementary gym floor. The company is a COSTARS vendor.

• The Williams Valley Band to use the band room and upper parking lot at the high school for band camp and practices in July and August.

• Giving the superintendant authority to submit grant applications for the district throughout the 2020-21 fiscal year. Grants that are approved will be submitted to the board for acceptance or rejection at future board meetings.

• Purchasing of a zero-turn lawn mower for the elementary school at a cost not to exceed $9,520.

• Purchasing a boiler for the elementary school at a cost not to exceed $7,000.

The board failed to accept a proposal not to exceed $10,000 from Stahl-Sheaffer Engineering, of State College, for a feasibility study for the district’s sports building.

The next school board meeting will be held virtually at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
