Ronan Tynan is returning to Schuylkill County.
The world renowned tenor will perform at 2 p.m. May 4 at the Robert Wachter Auditorium at Pottsville Area High School.
This will mark Tynan's third county performance. Hundreds of people attended the shows in 2011 and 2012.
The Schuylkill County Medical Society is hosting the event.
"The show starts at 2 p.m. The doors will open at 1 p.m. and the show should be over by 2:30 p.m.," Joseph "Hap" Anthony, Duncott, organizer of the event, said.
People will have the opportunity to meet the man known as "America's Irish Tenor" and talk to him after the show, Anthony said.
"This show is geared to kids who have a dream in life and to not give up on their dream," he said.
Tynan was born in Kilkenny, Ireland, in 1960 with a disability in both of his legs. He had them amputated at age 20 after an accident and now uses prosthetic legs to walk.
He is also an orthopedic doctor and a winner of gold medals in the Paralympic Games.
"He's a very humble guy," Anthony said.
Tynan sang "Amazing Grace" at former President Ronald Reagan's funeral, "God Bless America" at Yankees baseball games, Carnegie Hall and other memorable locations.
During the intermission, he will receive a plaque from the Schuylkill County Medical Society "in recognition of lifting hearts and elevating minds."
Dr. Barry Jenkins, chairman of the department of anesthesiology at Schuylkill Health System, said Tynan has a very inspirational life story.
"He's overcome a lot of obstacles in his life," Jenkins said.
The event is meant to get people interested in medicine and the arts.
"You don't necessarily have to choose one or the other," he said.
There are local members of the medical community who are proficient in their chosen profession and artistic pursuits. They include Dr. Abdul Wahhab, general surgeon at Schuylkill Health System, who is also a painter, and Dr. David Krewson, an obstetrician/gynecologist at Schuylkill Health System, who is also a singer.
Tickets are still available for the performance.
Adult tickets are $30 in advance and $40 at the door. Student tickets are $10. One student will win an iPad mini during intermission. For more information, call 570-728-4885 or 570-544-4674.
Proceeds benefit the Pottsville Area Music Endowment, a charity that raises money for music lessons and musical instruments and gives money for schools, Jenkins said.
