The first of a new musical series, "Music at the Majestic," premiered Sunday afternoon at the Sovereign Majestic Theater, Pottsville.
Music at the Majestic featured two performers who got their start in Schuykill County as children, Jenna McBreen and Christopher Brossman; two youth performers, Keiffer and Gabrielle Quandel, Hegins, as well as the Mahanoy Area Middle School Special Choir.
"We are hoping to do three or four more in the series before the end of the year," said Sandy Kost-Sterner, a member of the theater's board of directors who put the show together.
Kost-Sterner said that all of the shows will be a similar format, featuring headline performers, two youth performers and a group.
McBreen, who now lives and performs in the Allentown and Philadelphia areas, has performed in Schuylkill County and beyond as an actress, singer and dancer. She said she was honored to have been asked to perform at the event.
"It's a really good fundraiser for theater and a great thing to have in Schuykill County, to foster the arts in this area," she said.
Brossman, a professional singer, actor and director from Schuylkill Haven, discovered the arts by singing in the Children's Choir at St. John's UCC, Orwigsburg. He agreed the event was "a great thing to keep the arts alive in Schuylkill County."
"I think it gets them (children) interested when they're young and gives them another outlet," Brossman said. "I know sports is really big in this area but its nice to give the other kids an outlet and opportunity to show their talents off as well."
Pianist Bruce Marianelli, who also performed Sunday, said it "is something you can do you're whole life. You can't do sports your whole life."
The show started off with Gabrielle Quandel performing "Traveling Soldier" by the Dixie Chicks with her guitar, followed by her brother, Keiffer Quandel, performing "Piano Man" by Billy Joel, while also playing the piano.
The Mahanoy Area Middle School Special Choir followed Gabrielle and Keiffer Quandel, who also performed a duet after the choir's performance.
Later in the show, McBreen and Brossman did numerous songs, some from popular movies and shows.
McBreen sang "Love is An Open Door" and "Let It Go" from the recent popular Disney film "Frozen."
"Some of the songs we picked were because they're really popular right now," McBreen said.
Among Brossman's songs was "The Song That Goes Like This" from "Spamalot" and "Goodbye" from "Catch Me If You Can."
"I tried to pick things that I could connect with," Brossman said. "Some people think it's easy to come up with a song list, but we went through a couple duets before we decided the ones we were going to do."
No date has yet been announced for the next show in the series.
