n Harrisburg: The Pennsylvania Medical Society Alliance, in conjunction with The Foundation of the Pennsylvania Medical Society, is offering multiple $2,500 scholarships to Pennsylvania residents attending accredited Pennsylvania medical schools full time as a second- or third-year students. Applications must be postmarked by Feb. 28. In addition to completing an application, candidates must submit two reference letters, verification of medical school enrollment on school letterhead and an essay describing the applicant's vision for the future of Pennsylvania medicine, according to an alliance press release. The Pennsylvania Medical Society Alliance established the Alliance Medical Education Scholarship fund in April 2000. The scholarships are possible thanks to alliance fundraising events and contributions from its members. The alliance is an organization of physician spouses from the commonwealth who are working to improve the health and quality of life for all people, according to the release. The society foundation, which administers the scholarships, sustains the future of medicine in Pennsylvania by providing programs that support medical education, physician health and excellence in practice. It has been helping to finance medical education for more than 40 years, organizers said in the release. n Pottsville: The Schuylkill Conservation District, with the National Resources Conservation Service and the Penn State Extension, will again offer a series of workshops regarding the Chapter 91 manure management regulations. Workshops are scheduled for 6 to 9 p.m. Feb. 4 and 13 at the Schuylkill County Ag Center conference room, 1206 Ag Center Drive. The Schuylkill County Ag Center staff will provide attendees with manure planning assistance in order to meet the state regulations. Anyone who owns livestock or spreads manure is required to have a plan that outlines manure production and utilization, according to a center press release. The workshops are free. n Pottsville: At a recent meeting of the Pottsville Kiwanis Club, Barry Jones, of the Conyngham Valley Kiwanis Club who also is the eliminate chairman with Pennsylvania Kiwanis, described that the current eliminate project is to stamp out maternal neonatal tetanus, which causes an excruciating death in infants within the first three to six months of birth. Jones is looking for someone from the Pottsville club to volunteer as the club's eliminate representative. Anyone interested should notify one of the Kiwanis officers or board members.
