Actions speak louder than words for 10 volunteers in Kline Township.

Known as the Kline Township Beautification Committee, the group is serious about making the seven sections of the township look a little better.

"Our goal is to beautify the township one section at a time," Gary Perna, chairman, said.

The committee also includes Joe Landue, vice chairman; Lori Kane, secretary; Carol Sanko, treasurer and wife of township Supervisor Nick Sanko; and a half-dozen others.

They are presently sprucing up the Kelayres Playground where they have taken apart the equipment and are repainting it. They also are working on a walkway around the playground.

"The kids could play on the equipment while the parents can walk around the pathway and be able to watch their kids," Perna said.

Perna said the work being done is in cooperation with Joe and Ruth Wargo, who bought the playground land about 10 years ago and signed an agreement that allows the township to use it.

Along with repainting the playground's original equipment, some of it about 30 years old, the group plans to restore the volleyball and basketball courts, Perna said. Also, the McAdoo Lions Club is donating wood for new benches, he said.

Once the playground work is complete, the beautification committee plans to work in Lofty, Haddock, Spring Mountain, East McAdoo Heights, Woodside Terrace and Silverbrook, but needs more volunteers to help with those projects.

"We painted the original flagpole and put it back up. It is going to be part of a memorial to honor Ken Cara, the Kline Township deputy chief of the fire company who drowned in 1988 during a scuba-diving operation," Perna said. "Cara's death was the only line-of-duty death with the Kline Township Fire Company."

Cara also served as a township police captain.

Perna said he and the other volunteers believe Cara "should be remembered for his service on the police and fire departments." A ceremony is planned for the dedication of the memorial, according to Perna.

"I'm hoping everything will be in place and completed sometime later this year," he said.

The committee meets at 7 p.m. the first Monday of every month at the municipal building on Fifth Street in Kelayres, and Perna invited anyone interested in volunteering or joining the group to attend the next meeting.

"We always need and can use more volunteers and any help is appreciated, if you just want to help clean up or get involved in any of the projects we are planning," Perna said. "We just want to be proud of each section of the township."
