n Frackville: A Ukrainian food sale will be held beginning at noon Monday at St. Michael Ukrainian Catholic Church Hall, West Oak Street (Route 61). The sale will include food from Ukrainian Seminary Day, including halushki, halupki and pierogies. All are welcome.

n Hegins: The 31st annual Bootleggers’ Independent Coal Miners Picnic will be held, rain or shine, at noon Aug. 8 at Hegins Park. Hot meals will be served at 4 p.m. and cold cuts, soups and similar fare will be available. Entertainment will be by a disc jockey, Gold Dust, Old Gold, The Breaker Boys and Red Halo. Names on the annual mugs are as follows: In memory of Norman J. Dinger, 1969; Art Hull Shumber, 1981; Donald J. Ducer Herring, 1998; George Pinchorski, 2014; Charles C. Charlie Klinger, 2014; Albert R. Dook Carl Sr., 2014; Homer J. n Mahanoy City: The Mahanoy City Public Library is sponsoring a fundraiser trip to Mohegan Sun Casino on Aug. 11. The bus will leave from the former Service Electric lot at 9 a.m. and will leave the casino at 4 p.m. for the return trip. The cost is $22 with a $25 slot rebate and $5 food voucher. n Pottsville: Beginning July 29, seven “world class” drum and bugle corps will “descend upon Schuylkill County and neighboring areas” to prepare for competition in the Drum Corps International Eastern Championships to be held July 31 and Aug. 1 at Allentown’s J. Birney Crum Stadium, according to a press release from Pottsville Area School District’s D.H.H. Lengel Middle School. Corps that will be arrive locally and their host districts are as follows: Cascades Drum and Bugle Corps, Seattle, Washington, Blue Mountain School District, July 30-31; Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps, Concord, California, Hamburg Area School District, July 29-Aug. 1; Spirit of Atlanta Drum and Bugle Corps, Atlanta, Georgia, Mount Carmel Area School District, July 30-31; Santa Clara Vanguard Drum and Bugle Corps, Santa Clara, California, Pottsville Area School District, July 31-Aug. 1; Troopers Drum and Bugle Corps, Casper, Wyoming, Schuylkill Haven Area School District, July 31-Aug. 1; Oregon Crusaders Drum and Bugle Corps, Portland, Oregon, Williams Valley School District, July 31-Aug. 1; The Academy Drum and Bugle Corps, Tempe, Arizona, Jim Thorpe Area School District, July 30-Aug. 1. “As a youth activity, the world of competitive drum and bugle corps is an intense, choreographed musical experience staged on football stadium fields by students achieving high levels of excellence in performance. Through the drum and bugle corps experience, young people develop life skills including self-discipline …” according to the release. The summer competitive season for corps will conclude with the Drum Corps International World Championships in Indianapolis, Indiana, the second week of August. n Primrose: The 81st annual Ukrainian Day will be held on Sunday at St. Nicholas Grove, Route 901, beginning at 11 a.m. wih a Hierarchical Divine Liturgy. The event will include homemade ethnic food such as halupki, halushki, pierogi, kielbasi, potato cakes, soups, desserts and other fare. Vendors will be on hand selling Eastern European items and there will be pysanky demonstrations and classes, games for children and a basket auction. There will be a live polka radio broadcast by WPPA 1360 AM, performances by the Kazka Ukrainian Folk Ensemble and by John Stevens and his Doubleshot polka band. Admission and parking are free. Buses are welcome. Proceeds will benefit St. Josaphat Ukrainian Catholic Seminary.
