The Schuylkill County Communications Center is getting a new roof while the prison is getting a new hot water boiler.
The county commissioners approved the advertisement for bids at a work session Wednesday for the project to replace the roof of the communications building.
Bids will be accepted in the controller's office until 2 p.m. Sept. 16, and will be opened at the work session scheduled for Sept. 18. A tentative award date was set for the commissioners' meeting on Sept. 25.
Part of the $21 million bond issued by the county in October 2012 will be used to pay for the project.
The board also approved an agreement Wednesday with Antz Energy Systems, Shenandoah, for the installation of a new gas-fired hot water boiler at the Schuylkill County Prison.
The cost of the project is $19,100. Funds were moved from within the prison budget to a capital account for the project, Paul Buber, county financial analyst, said. It will not be taken from the county general fund.
The Schuylkill County/Joe Zerbey Airport Authority will receive a $400,000 local match from the county for its proposed hangar project. The board adopted a resolution to lend the money to the authority Wednesday. The local match is a requirement of Pennsylvania's Capital Block Grant that contributed $400,000 for the construction.
The proposed hangar at the airport will be 96 feet by 83 feet and 28 feet high, large enough to house corporate-sized planes.
The county will hold a second public hearing for Community Block Development Grant funding on Sept. 4 at the Schuylkill County Courthouse. There will also be meetings at West Penn Township on Sept. 9 and at Pine Grove Township on Sept. 11. The county received $276,838 for its CDBG program, which includes 57 municipalities. West Penn and Pine Grove townships have their own entitlement program, which is based on population. West Penn Township received $83,929.47 and Pine Grove Township received $81,492.84.
The county also submitted an application to the Department of Community and Economic Development for disaster recovery funding. The application is $100,000 for a project on Industrial Road in West Mahanoy Township.
The county had a budget of $55,389,680 Wednesday, down slightly from $59,290,759.54 on July 13, according to the monthly treasurer's report. The county's general fund was at $25,094,022.60, also down slightly from $25,977,020.11 on July 13.
The monthly prison board meeting will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the commissioners' board room.
