n Gilberton: During a recent meeting of the borough council, President Daniel Malloy issued a reminder to residents that sidewalks must be cleaned of snow and ice in order to create a path for pedestrians within 24 hours after a winter weather event. Violators will be ticketed by code enforcement officer John Boxer, who said the fine for the first violation is $25 and will increase with subsequent tickets.
n Gordon: The Gordon Fish and Game Club will hold a free six-week program for beginners to learn the basics of fly tying taught by experienced fly anglers. The classes will be held from noon to 3 p.m. in the council meeting room at Gordon Borough Hall Feb. 7, 14, 21 and 28, and March 7 and 14. Classes are open for people age 8 to adults. n Schuylkill Haven: The Anthracite Council of the Society of Professional Engineers will hold the local MATHCOUNTS competition from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Student Community Center on Penn State Schuylkill campus. The snow date is Feb. 21. Sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders from the following schools are registered to participate: Blue Mountain, Pottsville Area, Mount Carmel Area, St. Ambrose, Saint Clair Area, St. Jerome Regional, Schuylkill Haven Area, Tamaqua Area and Weatherly Area. The event will begin with individual written tests at 9 a.m., a team-written test at 11 a.m. and individual countdown round beginning at noon and lasting for about an hour. The countdown round will decide which “mathletes” will represent the Anthracite chapter at the state competition. MATHCOUNTS is a nationwide math coaching and competitiion program for middle school students, according to an event press release. It promotes student interest in math by making math achievement as challenging, exciting and prestigious as a school sport, officials said in the release.
