Forecasts have called for snow, sleet and freezing rain for Schuylkill County into today.

A winter storm warning is in effect until 1 p.m.

David Martin, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, State College, said Sunday Schuylkill County could get six to eight inches of snow in the northern part of the county and five to six inches elsewhere.

The majority of the snow was expected to be on the ground by 7 a.m., Martin said. In addition to the three to seven inches that fell in some areas, an additional one to two inches could fall today when all is said and done, according to the NWS.

Dan Kelly, superintendent of streets for Pottsville, said as of 7:43 p.m. Sunday the road crew had not started plowing because it had not received a call to do so. Workers will be out “probably all night,” Kelly said.

The snow emergency Level 2 parking ban is in effect until 5 p.m. today, Kelly said.

All vehicles must be removed from snow emergency routes and fire lanes. With a snowfall of at least six inches, roads could become icy, officials said, adding that motorists should not drive unless it is necessary and if they must drive, they should use extreme caution. Gov. Tom Wolf urged motorists to use caution during the storm.

“I am working closely with PEMA and PennDOT to monitor the situation and we are prepared to send resources wherever necessary. I am urging drivers to stay off the roads if possible and to use extreme caution when traveling especially when heading to work,” Wolf said.

PennDOT also urged motorists to use caution.

“During storms, interstates and expressways are PennDOT’s primary focus and equipment may be redirected to these routes during significant winter events. The heavier the precipitation, the longer it takes trucks to complete their snow routes. In some cases, motorists may find deeper accumulations on less traveled routes and should adjust their driving for those conditions. When snow is falling, even the busiest routes will have some snow cover,” PennDOT officials said.

According to The Associated Press, forecasters said Pennsylvania will get a blast of winter weather overnight Sunday and into today with snow, sleet and freezing rain expected in much of the commonwealth.

The National Weather Service has posted warnings and watches for many counties with the approach of the storm that was to begin Sunday night and continued through today.

Forecasters said six to 10 inches of snow could fall in many sections of the state.

The Lehigh Valley area is expected to get three to eight inches of snow with up to two-tenths of an inch of ice.

In the Philadelphia area, forecasters expect up to an inch of snow and a little ice, but the precipitation will change to rain today, they said.
