DUNCOTT — A motorcycle rider was seriously injured when his vehicle struck a car about 11:50 a.m. Thursday in Cass Township.
Cass Township police Patrolman Joseph Kavanaugh said David Califf, 54, of Valley Road, Cass Township, was driving his Harley-Davidson north on Valley Road when a southbound PT Cruiser driven by Robert Sweitzer, Saint Clair, attempted to make a left turn onto Breaker Road.
In doing so, Sweitzer turned directly into the path of the motorcycle, which hit the car broadside.
Kavanaugh said Califf was thrown over the car and onto the highway. He was not wearing a helmet and suffered severe head injuries. Califf was taken to the Minersville helipad, where a helicopter was summoned and flew him to Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, where, as of Thursday afternoon, he was still being treated.
Sweitzer and his passengers, John Gartner, Saint Clair, owner of the vehicle, and Audrey Oswald, also of Saint Clair, were not injured, Kavanaugh said.
A state police accident reconstruction team was called to assist in the investigation, Kavanaugh said.
Frackville EMS and Pottsville-Schuylkill Haven Area EMS treated the motorcycle driver at the scene and transported him to the helipad, and Minersville and Heckshersville firefighters and Minersville police assisted at the scene.
Kavanaugh said charges are pending against Sweitzer pending the outcome of the investigation.
Parts of Valley and Breaker roads were closed briefly while the accident was investigated and the vehicles towed from the scene.
Kavanaugh said both vehicles sustained extensive damage, the front of the motorcycle and the passenger’s side of the PT Cruiser.
