SAINT CLAIR — The Rhoades Foundation received approval Tuesday to hold the fifth annual 5K run and one-mile family fun run on Oct. 19 from the Saint Clair borough council.
The event proceeds will be used to “promote the Rhoades Foundation mission through scholarships, donations, events and other means to educate, encourage and enrich our communities,” according to a letter send by the foundation to the borough.
The purpose of the event is to promote healthy lifestyles, community involvement and charitable activities, according to the letter.
The event will start in the Saint Clair Industrial Park, proceed through the borough and return to the starting line, as it has the past four years. A new addition to the race this year is the Schuylkill County 5K Triple Crown Award, which will be offered to the top combined racers in each race. Celebratory food and drinks will be provided.
In other business, the borough received an award of $21,000 from Schuylkill Community Action to be used in the North Ward Rehabilitation Project.
The award is for Act 137 funds, also known as the 2014 Affordable Housing Trust Fund. According to the acceptance letter, the round of funding was competitive and in total, five projects, although funded, received awards less than their requested amount. The borough originally requested $35,000.
The borough’s general fund as of July 31 was $50,023, and $18,827.11 was spent in expenditures in the last month.
Saint Clair Mayor Richard Tomko extended his thanks at Tuesday’s meeting to all that were involved in making the 2014 Saint Clair Car Cruise, as well as the Old Fashioned Day community picnic, a success.
In tax business, borough solicitor Edward Brennan said that a few property owners have still been calling the borough because they received a notice of tax sale and wanted to remind the council that there are still a few loose ends from the prior tax collector’s mistakes. Those who received the notice in error should not be alarmed and may call the borough to sort out the situation.
The final plan was approved for Taco Bell, the fast food restaurant due to be finished in the Coal Creek Plaza by December. The borough is now looking that all of the conditions of their contract are met.
In personnel business, Sean Farrell, a student at McCann School of Business, has been approved to do an externship in the Saint Clair Electric Light Department as a requirement to earn his associate degree. The externship will be every Friday from September to December this year. He will be working for free and all insurances are provided by the school. Farrell has been in school for two years.
