TOWER CITY - A 17-year-old boy died early Sunday morning when his vehicle overturned and struck a tree on Route 209, about half a mile north of Keystone Road in Porter Township.

Another 17-year-old, who was a passenger in the vehicle, suffered severe injuries and was flown to Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, Hershey, by LifeFlight helicopter.

Schuylkill County Coroner Dr. David J. Moylan III said Antonio Rios was pronounced dead at the scene.

"We suspect massive internal injuries," he said.

Moylan did not know where Rios was from.

A post-mortum virtual autopsy will be performed today, Moylan said.

State police at Schuylkill Haven said Rios was driving a white 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt south on Route 209 when he lost control while following a left-hand curve in the road.

Police said the vehicle crossed into the northbound lane and the driver attempted to correct his steering.

However, the vehicle slid across the southbound lane, left the roadway, rolled onto its left side and struck a tree.

The vehicle then spun 90 degrees and rolled onto its roof, coming to a rest in the center of the road, police said.

Police said both the driver and passenger were wearing seat belts and the front air bags had deployed.

State police did not release the name of the passenger.
