n Pottsville: Jessica Humanick-Murphy, events planner at Mountain Valley Golf Course and Seasons Restaurant and banquet venue, Barnesville, recently spoke to the Pottsville Rotary Club, providing a detailed history of the golf course and restaurant. She said construction on the course began in 1963 and it was completed in 1968 as an 18-hole golf course with a clubhouse. The course, she said, was basically untouched from 1968 through 1996, when the original course was redesigned and a nine-hole course was added. All 18 greens were replaced and new sand traps and mounds were added. In 1997, work was started on a new clubhouse, which was completed in 1998. By 1999, the course had "three 9's," the Oak, Maple and Pine courses, Humanic-Murphy said. The revamped clubhouse featured a full kitchen and began attracting events such as tournaments and small catered functions. In 2001, with the success of Madness on the Mountain, a new deck was opened that holds up to 1,500 people and averages about 750 patrons every Friday night. In 2010, a fourth 9-hole course opened, which soon gave way to two 18-hole courses, the Mountain and Valley courses. She said the MainStay Suites opened in 2013, featuring 70 deluxe rooms fully equipped including kitchens. The original deck was enclosed and a new ceremony area overlooking Locust Lake was opened. Today, she continued, the course offers a full-service pro shop, online access to scheduling tee times, a lighted driving range and full practice area. It hosts more than 100 golf events a year. Seasons Restaurant seats up to 350 people and serves as a banquet hall. Joanne Parulis spoke about some of the events Mountain Valley hosts, including deck parties Friday and Sunday nights, golf tournaments and an upcoming partnership with Galen Glen Winery on a wine dinner.
