Ice Cream Caboose, King's Village, Minersville, is teaming up Wednesday with the Minersville Area Skate Park Association to raise funds for the park's construction.
Fundraising for the past three years has allowed the Minersville Area Skate Park Association to plan and initiate the construction of the first half of the skate park.
Construction on the skate park will begin Monday and last about four weeks. The skate park will be located behind the softball field near the New Minersville Fire Company.
The first part of the skate park will be 2,500 square feet. This will include stairs, grind boxes, rails and ramps.
After enough fundraising is done, a second part of the skate park will be added on to total about 5,000 square feet, which will incorporate a bowl.
The percentage the association receives from the ice cream fundraiser varies on sales, Bobbie Domlesky, association secretary, said.
Those who attend the Ice Cream Caboose's fundraiser from noon to 9 p.m. should say they are there for the Minersville Skate Park fundraiser.
The association has raised more than $20,000 dollars with small fundraisers like the Ice Cream Caboose fundraiser. An additional $5,000 was donated by the Tony Hawk Foundation.
"I cannot say enough about the people who have supported us. It's been phenomenal," Domlesky said.
The association was started to keep kids off the streets and safe.
"The kids started scootering or skateboarding on people's property, and the cops would be called. They were getting chased off the streets. They didn't have anywhere to go," Domlesky told the Republican-Herald in early June.
The association is also selling raffle tickets for a 47-inch flat-screen TV to be drawn on July 4. Tickets are $3 each or two for $5 and can be purchased by calling Domlesky at 570-294-6235.
Donations to the skate park association can be made by visiting www.minersvilleareaskatepark.webs.com via PayPal or by contacting Domlesky, as well.
Those interested in assisting the association can attend monthly meetings at 6:30 p.m. on the first Monday of each month, excluding holidays, at the Minersville Sewer Authority. Meetings are open to all members, nonmembers and the public.
Annual dues are $5 per adult over the age of 18. Under 18 members are associate nonvoting members and are welcome to join.
