ASHLAND - The borough council gave its approval to several long-standing annual events in the borough during its June 11 meeting.
The borough council approved a request from Ashland Community Enterprises to hold the 22nd annual Pioneer Day on Aug. 16 at Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine and Steam Train at Higher Up Park. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and include entertainment, crafters, food vendors and amusements for children.
The council also approved the use of Eureka Park on Aug. 13 by Ashland Area Rotary Club for its annual chicken dinner, followed by a free concert by The Cressona Band at the bandstand.
Permission was also given to the Ashland Boys' Association committee to hold the annual ABA parade beginning at 6 p.m. Aug. 30.
The fourth permission for parking restrictions was given to Ashland Elks Lodge 384 for its annual Elks Poker Run on June 14.
In other business, the borough council acted on the following agenda items:
- An ordinance to vacate a section of North Seventh Street at the request of Mi-Jo Pallet Co. Inc., Ashland. The company requested in a letter last November for the borough to vacate (abandon) the dedicated paper street on the west side of the company's property. While on borough maps, the paper street has never been opened.
- Authorized the replacement of the transmission in the 2010 Chevrolet Impala police car. Borough Manager Ray Jones Jr. said the cost will depend on warranties, which needs to be researched. Jones said an estimate for the replacement is about $2,000.
- Approved establishing a petty cash fund for the police department for basic needs. Jones said the petty cash amount will be $500. Receipts will be submitted to the borough office to reimburse the fund.
- Authorized the lease purchase agreement with Real Lease Inc., Pittsford, New York, for the 1996 Pierce Lance 1,500 GPM pumper at a cost not to exceed $51,675. The loan is for 120 months at the current municipal rate of 5.39 percent.
- Approved submitting an application to the county for Community Development Block Grant funds to demolish a property at 830 Market St. Jones said the borough will not take ownership of the property from the owner until the grant funds are secured for the demolition.
- Approved a tag day and door-to-door collections by the American Hose Company for the annual fireworks program on July 3. The door-to-door collections will be Tuesday and June 25, followed by the tag day on June 29.
