n Ashland: During the May 14 meeting of the borough council, borough Manager Raymond M. Jones Jr. updated the council on the planned development of lots at Seventh and Centre streets through Schuylkill Community Action. The borough applied for $15,000 in Act 137 funds for the project. Jones also said the American Hose Company gave the borough the purchase agreement for its new 1996 Pierce Lance pumper so a loan of $51,500 can be obtained by the borough to repay the fire company.

n Barnesville: Smokey Bear will be at the Locust Lake State Park amphitheater in a program that will begin at 6:30 p.m. Saturday. Smokey will visit following a presentation by Dave Duffy, fire chief of the New England Fire Company, on fire prevention and campfire safety. The program is free and open to the public. Children must be accompanied by an adult. It will be canceled in the event of rain.

n Millersburg: The Ned Smith Center for Nature and Art has opened a new footbridge providing access to its North Trail system, constructed cooperatively by its all-volunteer Lands and Trails Committee and volunteers from the Union Sportsmen's Alliance's Work Boots on the Ground program, a volunteer initiative that mobilizes skilled labor union volunteers for conservation projects throughout the United States. The North Trail system, according to a center release, represents more than two miles of the center's 12 miles of hiking trails and has "incredible educational value for the thousands of students, families, hikers, anglers and hunters who visit the center's 500-plus acres each year," officials said in the release. It features the northernmost known cluster of American holly in the United States, several overlooks perfect for viewing raptors gliding over the Wiconisco Creek and a rustic birdfeeding station.
