Workers continue their efforts to replace the roof at the Schuylkill County Prison and should be completed in about three weeks.

Warden Gene Berdanier said at the monthly prison board meeting Wednesday that some of the smaller sections on the roof are completed and the tower is still being worked on.

The roof replacement was one of several county projects being funded through the $21 million bond issued in October 2012. Budget Renovation and Roofing, Shamokin, was awarded the contract for the prison work for $404,975.

Berdanier said recent heavy rains caused a leak in the roof above F-block, and the roofers patched the holes until that section can be replaced.

In other matters, the average inmate population at the prison remained the same from March to April at 279. The suggested capacity is 240.

Population peaked at 285 for April. The peak women census was 51 for April.

On Wednesday, there were 268 inmates at the prison. That included 218 men and 50 women.

Nine offenders joined the prerelease program in April. The program consisted of 39 people saving 890 total jail days.

One person was removed for violations. About 3,560 alcohol tests were administered and 191 drug tests were taken on the program participants.

"The prerelease program is going really well," Berdanier said. "We continue to be very pleased with that program."

The prison has no staff vacancies. There are two correctional officers and a program secretary on extended medical leave.
