Minersville limits road in borough to one-way

MINERSVILLE - Only one-way traffic will be allowed on South Front Street, the borough council decided Wednesday.

The borough council approved an ordinance at a public meeting Wednesday establishing one-way traffic north on the road, which is only a block between Sunbury and South streets.

"We are making it a one-way because it is a hazard being two-way at that one intersection," borough police Chief Michael Combs said. "It needs to be one-way."

There will still be parking on both sides of the street.

Combs received permission from the council to plan a gun safety course in the borough. While the details have yet to be finalized, the course will consist of class room sessions and then use of the police department's shooting range.

"We thought it would be a good thing for our residents," Combs said.

Combs said it will probably be open to about 20 people. It will be limited to handguns and each participant needs to provide their own ammo. A date has not been set, but it will be sometime in June, Combs said.

"I think it is a very good idea," council President Bill Angelo said.

Borough resident Michael Quinn also asked the council for permission teach SCUBA lessons at Minersville's pool.

The council allowed Quinn to use the pool before and after regular hours and suggested he coordinate the program with the swimming lessons. Quinn said he wanted to start the program "just to get the kids involved in something, like snorkeling."
