A stone arch repaired in 2011 has collapsed again in Pottsville.
The hole opened Wednesday on East Market Street near Logan Alley, Dan Kelly, superintendent of streets, said Friday.
"You can see parts of the arch down there," he said.
The hole is about 5 feet by 6 feet wide and about 6 to 7 feet deep, Kelly said, adding the arch is part of the stormwater sewer system.
"The Greater Pottsville Area Sewer Authority is going to have contractors in Monday and repair it," Kelly said.
Timothy Yingling, executive director of the sewer authority, did not return a call for comment Friday.
City Administrator Thomas A. Palamar also did not return a call for comment Friday.
Kelly said the hole opened about 7 p.m. Wednesday. The city police notified the Schuylkill County Communications Center and they contacted Kelly.
A "road closed" sign and a barricade sit in the street near the Sage Coffee House and Tea Garden, 26 N. Centre St.
The road will remain closed until repairs are made, Kelly said.
Orange netting and barricades block the hole near the sidewalk down the street toward Progress Avenue.
Kelly said it is possible that the recent heavy rain caused the arch to collapse.
"It's part of our aging infrastructure. These things are going to happen," he said.
In September 2011, the arch collapsed and was repaired by Mazzucca Enterprises Inc., Pottsville.
Another stone arch collapsed Nov. 12, 2012, on Mahantongo Street, in which the right rear wheel of a Kreitzer Sanitation garbage truck got stuck. That hole was 12 to 15 feet long and 8 feet deep.
Just last month, a deteriorating tree stump and heavy rains were suspected in causing a hole in the lower level of the Schuylkill County Courthouse parking lot. The hole has since been repaired.
