LAVELLE - The Anthracite Animal Clinic is collecting food for dogs and cats.
"There's just a lot of pets in the shelter over the summer," Jen Snyder, a technician at the clinic, said Tuesday.
She said it was her idea to collect food for animals and the effort started about two weeks ago. So far, they have collected about 25 cardboard boxes of food.
"I thought it would be a great summer project for us to do," she said.
Donated cat food will go to Far Point Animal Rescue in Port Treverton, Snyder County, and will be given to the rescue later this month.
"We're taking anything," she said.
That location was chosen because veterinarian Dr. Kate Harnish suggested it after having calls out there before.
Harnish said she previously had calls for animals and recognized the compassion given to them.
"They're just very, very nice people," she said.
Another shelter has not been selected yet but the staff may do that Thursday at their meeting.
Harnish said Hillside SPCA might receive the other donation.
Those wanting to donate will be able to until the end of the month. Some clients have already donated, Snyder said.
Harnish said this is the first time they have held a food drive and collecting food for pets might be something they do every year.
Donating can really help out a pet in need.
"It will certainly give those pets more a chance to find a home because the shelter can afford to feed them," she said.
Harnish said the effort is just a way to give back to the community.
"We have a lot of animals out there without homes in need of food," she said.
