Sewage came out of an arch that was showing signs of wear Thursday in the 300 block of Division Street, Pottsville.
"It was a brick arch and it was collapsed a little bit," Jerry Setlock, a worker with the Greater Pottsville Area Sewer Authority, said Thursday.
A hole about 10 feet long, 5 feet wide and 6 feet deep was made in the street to get to the arch.
Setlock said it was a 6-by-12-inch wide arch. The age of the structure is not known.
Workers at the site said the arch is not on the authority's maps.
A long pipe was temporarily fitted to where the arch was but was later removed.
Stone was used to fill up the hole in the street.
"Tomorrow (Friday), the whole line gets replaced the whole way down," Bob Brennan of the sewer authority said.
He estimated the arch was 200 feet from Third Street.
Timothy R. Yingling, executive director of the Greater Pottsville Area Sewer Authority, did not return an email for comment.
