The North Central Highway Safety Network on Monday launched a crackdown on aggressive driving.
Enforcement details will work through May 4 as part of a statewide effort.
In Schuylkill County, participating departments will include Ashland, Schuylkill Haven, Tamaqua, Butler Township, West Penn Township, Schuylkill Township and West Mahanoy Township.
These officers are joining more than 330 municipal police agencies and the Pennsylvania State Police to reduce the number of aggressive driving related crashes, injuries and deaths on 435 roadways throughout the commonwealth.
Roadways selected for the enforcement have been identified as having aggressive driving crashes as well as speeding citations.
In Schuylkill County, roadways targeted for enforcement include Interstate 81 and routes 61, 309, 901, 209, 183, 895 and 54.
Carol Alonge, state Department of Transportation regional coordinator with the North Central Highway Safety Network, said the focus for the six-week enforcement wave will be on distracted driving, speeding and work zone safety.
She said motorists exhibiting other unsafe driving behaviors such as driving too fast for conditions, following too closely, careless driving, red light running and any other aggressive driving actions will be stopped and cited.
According to PennDOT statistics, municipal police departments that participated in the 2013 campaign issued 116,191 aggressive driving tickets that included 54,785 for speeding and 14,452 for disobedience to traffic control signs or devices, the second most common offense.
In addition, the stepped up traffic enforcement led to 118 felony arrests, more than 1,200 arrests for DUI and 568 drug arrests.
The annual campaign is funded through both PennDOT and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
