Theft, crash

result in charges

HOMETOWN - Rush Township police released information on two incidents that occurred recently in their coverage area.

Police said they charged a 17-year-old Summit Hill boy with retail theft for stealing items valued at $89 from the GNC store on March 8.

In the second incident, police said David L. Klepsch, 56, of Hazleton, was driving a 1991 Buick Skylark at 2:48 a.m. Saturday on Fairview Street when he lost control, causing the car to flip onto its side.

Police said Klepsch was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest, and police said that alcohol played a role in the crash. Charges are pending the results of a blood alcohol test taken following the crash, police said.

The North Central PA Regional DUI Enforcement Program released results of three enforcement details conducted on March 15 and 16.

On March 15, two officers from two departments conducted a Roving DUI Patrol that resulted in 16 vehicles contacted and detained and one driver tested for DUI. There was one juvenile DUI arrest made along with one arrest for underage drinking, nine traffic arrests and one criminal arrest. The officers also issued one seat belt citation and 12 warning notices.

A DUI Checkpoint was conducted March 16 in Frackville and resulted in 709 vehicles contacted, 16 detained and five drivers tested for DUI. There was one DUI arrest made along with 11 traffic arrests and one criminal arrest. The eight officers from five departments that participated also issued nine warning notices.

Also on March 16, three officers from three departments conducted a Roving DUI Patrol that resulted in 24 vehicles being stopped and detained. There were no DUI arrests made but the officers made 12 traffic arrests, two criminal arrests and 10 warning notices issued.

Another Roving DUI Patrol conducted that same day by one officer resulted in six vehicles contacted and detained and one driver tested for DUI. There were no DUI arrests, but the officer made two traffic arrests and issued four warning notices.

The North Central Regional Sobriety Checkpoint DUI Taskforce announced that Sobriety Checkpoints and Roving DUI Patrols will be conducted now through March 31 on routes 61, 183, 901, 209, 1006, 309, 1008, 443, 895, 125, 25, 924 and 54.

Travelers are reminded to call 911 if they suspect a drunk driver or to call, toll-free, 888-UNDER21 to report underage drinking.

Mahanoy man

charged in stop

MAHANOY CITY - A borough man was charged by Mahanoy City police after a traffic stop in the 800 block of East Centre Street about 11:30 p.m. March 10.

Police said Andrew W. Zeiders III, 36, of 408 W. Market St., was charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and driving while operating privileges are suspended or revoked. He will now have to appear before Magisterial District Judge Anthony J. Kilker, Shenandoah.

Police said officers stopped a vehicle driven by Zeiders for an equipment violation, found the man did not have a valid driver's license and that he had three small plastic bags with a green substance that field tested positive for marijuana.

Drug charges

MAHANOY CITY - A Mahanoy Township man is facing drug charges as the result of a traffic stop by Mahanoy City police on South First Street about midnight Feb. 12.

Police said Saturday that Raymond G. Hower, 25, of 435 Roosevelt Drive, New Boston, was charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. Police said officers conducted a vehicle stop and found Hower to be in possession of five bags of what field tested positive for heroin.

Hower will now have to answer to the charges against him before Magisterial District Judge Anthony J. Kilker, Shenandoah.

2 teens accused

in retail thefts

Two teenage girls allegedly stole items from Super Shoes in the Fairlane Village mall on Saturday, police said.

State police at Schuylkill Haven said a 17-year-old Saint Clair girl removed a Carnhart long-sleeve shirt from the store at 4 p.m. Saturday and a 16-year-old Cressona girl took a Betesh Group purse and concealed it upon leaving the store, police said.

Both left without paying for the items, police said.

Charges will be filed with Magisterial District Judge David A. Plachko's office in Port Carbon, police said.

Copper wiring

FRIEDENSBURG - Someone gained entry to a building and stole copper wiring and piping between March 1 and Saturday in Wayne Township, police said.

State police at Schuylkill Haven said someone went into a vacant property owned by Doris Jean Bohler, 77, of Dillsburg, at 161 N. front St. and removed the items.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call police at 570-739-1330.
