n Girardville: The 11th annual St. Patrick's Day Parade will begin at noon Saturday with "Education" as the theme with superintendents of regional schools being the grand marshals. A Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. The parade, sponsored by the Jack Kehoe Division 1 of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, will include Irish bands and marchers. n Mar Lin: The American Cancer Society will sponsor a Relay for Life of Pottsville relayers' appreciation spaghetti dinner from 6:30 to 8 p.m. March 27 at Schuylkill Technology Center South Campus, 15 Maple Drive. According to an ACS release, the dinner is to "express appreciation for registered and future relayers." Organizers said committee members, relay teams and walkers are needed as well as "event support and community partnerships." n Pottsville: Sofiya Silfies, a realtor with Purdential Landis since November 2012 who was born and raised in Ukraine, recently addressed members of the Pottsville Kiwanis Club. She spoke about the rich history and culture of Ukraine and her experience growing up there. She studied foreign languages, graduated in 1991, married in Palo Alto in 2005 and became an American citizen in 2013, according to the Kiwanis newsletter. The club's board of directors met with President Theresa Gaffney recently and discussed the work being done in helping to get a homeless shelter up and running in Pottsville. Gaffner said there was an immediate need for bedding, toiletries, hygiene items, clothing such as socks plus sweats and gift cards. The board voted that the Pottsville Kiwanis Foundation donate $100 to Servants To All, the nonprofit group spearheading the homeless shelter project. Kiwanians who wish to donate any of the aformentioned items should contact Gaffney.
n Tamaqua: Tamaqua Area High School will present its spring musical, "HONK!" at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Doors will open at 6 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students. Refreshments and T-shirts will be on sale in the lobby, where there also will be activities for children.
