City man jailed
after assault arrest
A city man was jailed after being arrested by Pottsville police in connection with an assault about 5:25 p.m. Tuesday.
Police said Jahaad Baker, 29, of 627 Pierce St., was arrested pursuant to domestic violence simple assault and arraigned on charges of two counts of simple assault and harassment. He was then committed to Schuylkill County Prison unable to post $5,000 straight cash bail set by on-call Magisterial District Judge James R. Ferrier, Orwigsburg.
Police said officers were called to the 300 block of Pierce St. for a domestic dispute in progress and learned that Baker assaulted his live-in girlfriend.
The woman told officers that Baker was angry at her for wanting to end their relationship and after the two picked up their children, ages 2, 3 and 5, at day care together, Baker followed her to their home in his vehicle while his girlfriend took the children in her vehicle.
Immediately after arriving at the home, the woman said Baker entered her vehicle and took her cellphone and car keys and ordered to go inside the home, police said. When the woman exited the vehicle and tried to walk away, she said Baker grabbed her in a violent manner and proceeded to drag her down the street toward their home and threatened her saying, "I'm going to beat you if you don't get into the house," police said.
Baker continued the attack until a neighbor intervened and police were notified.
Police said the woman suffered a minor laceration above her left eye, which was red and swollen from the assault, but did not require medical attention.
