MAHANOY CITY - A state police fire marshal will assist in the investigation to determine the cause of a fire that damaged a borough home Tuesday morning.

Mahanoy City firefighters were called to 1202 E. Pine St. at 10:45 a.m. for a report of a structure fire with possible entrapment.

Firefighters arrived on scene within minutes and determined there was no entrapment and everyone was able to get out before volunteers arrived.

Anthony Blackwell Sr., Mahanoy City Fire Department administrative assistant and safety officer, said firefighters found a small fire in the basement of the 2 1/2 story, wooden-frame row home and were quickly able to extinguish the flames before they spread to other portions of the building.

Blackwell said the home is owned by Christina and Daniel Wetzel, who reside at 1200 E. Pine St., and is rented to Christina Wetzel's mother, Peg Palavich, who was home at the time of the fire and able to exit safely.

Blackwell said fire Chief Randy Kalce requested a state police fire marshal to assist in finding exactly how the fire started.

The chief commended firefighters for their quick action in containing the fire, especially during the daytime hours when many volunteers are at work.

Mahanoy City firefighters were assisted by Mahanoy City EMS, Mahanoy City police and Frackville firefighters.

The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation, officials said.
