POTTSVILLE — Repairs to the elevator at City Hall could be underway soon.

The Pottsville City Council voted unanimously to authorize Levkulic and Associates, Pottsville, to solicit bids for the project at Monday’s meeting.

The city budgeted funds for the project in the 2016 General Obligation Bond. City Administrator Thomas A. Palamar said the project, which includes upgrades and modifications, is listed at $175,000.

“It has been here since the ’70s,” Palamar said, adding a minor renovation was done about 25 years ago.

Depending on the bids returned and if they are awarded, construction might begin in July or August, Palamar said. It could take about 90 days to complete.

In other business, the council approved outdoor seating for The Wheel, 201 W. Market St. The restaurant’s owner, Savas Logothetides, said plans include five seating areas — two on West Market Street and three on Second Street — with black aluminium tables with room for two people.

The outdoor seating areas will not be available all year, Logothetides said, adding it could be ready for Memorial Day.

“What are you going to do with the piano?,” council member Mark Atkinson asked.

Logothetides said the piano will remain where it is until it finds a new home.

The council approved several certificates of appropriateness for signs in the city, as recommended by the Historical Architectural Review Board. They include a sign for Schuylkill County Historical Society, 305 N. Centre St., a hanging sign for DreamCatchers Art Emporium, 370 S. Centre St., and Eric Dong at 20 N. Centre St.

Atkinson voted “no” for a sign for Asian Express, Dong’s proposed restaurant at 20 N. Centre St. Atkinson said he didn’t like a small flame visible on the sign.

Other action taken by the council Monday includes:

• Designating Mullin & Lonergan Associates Inc. as the consultant for the Community Development Office for fiscal years 2017, 2018 and 2019

• Hiring summer workers for the JFK Pool Complex, summer playground instructors and part-time parks laborers. Noralea Matz was hired as the 2017 summer pool manager at the pre-season hourly rate of $10 and $500 a week until the pool is closed for the season.

• Dorothy Botto was reappointed to serve on the parking authority for a five-year term to expire June 1, 2022.
