Mahanoy City recognizes 150th decorating contest winners

MAHANOY CITY - The winners of the house and business decorating contests held during this summer's Mahanoy City Sesquicentennial celebration received their awards Tuesday at borough hall.

Mahanoy City borough council President Patti A. Schnitzius held the presentations in the meeting room, with some of the winners on hand to accept their framed awards. The awards were planned to be presented at the borough council meeting, which was canceled due to lack of a quorum.

"There are first, second and third place winners for individuals, and first, second and third place winners for businesses," Schnitzius said.

"Everybody put a great effort in decorating for our sesquicentennial," Schnitzius said. "Our proud was something to be proud of."

Mayor Nancy A. Petritsch read the wording on a certificate recognizing a winner for their participation in the decorating contests. Petritsch and Schnitzius presented the awards.

Decorating committee chairperson Ann Locker said after the presentations, "I would like to thank my committee, the sesqui committee and the borough. I would especially like to thank Billy Killian for the great job he has done on these certificates and all the hard work he had done in our borough."

Decorating committee member Peg Coombe was also in attendance.

Individual winners of the decorating contest were:

- First place: Leah Miller and Chris Nefos

- Second place: Teresa and Christine McCord

- Third place: Ruth Ann and John Maziekas

Business winners were:

- First place: The Lily Pad

- Second place: McNiff's Irish Pub

- Third place: Judy Yiengst Beauty Salon
