Firefighters braved sub-freezing temperatures Monday to battle two Schuylkill County fires, one in South Manheim Township and a short time later in Pine Grove Township.

According to a Schuylkill County Communications Center supervisor, crews from Schuylkill Haven, Auburn, Landingville, Summit Station and Friedensburg were called to 1629 Lightfoot Drive in Lake Wynonah about 4 a.m.

Chuck Weber, Auburn fire chief and South Manheim Township fire marshal, said crews were called to the home of Dave and Ruth Torogs after the woman woke up, looked outside and saw fire on the deck of the building.

Weber said he and state police fire marshal Trooper John Burns of the Frackville station were at the scene later Monday morning investigating.

The cause appears to be electrical, accidental in nature, Weber said, adding that no one was injured.

Summit Station fire Chief Brad Zimmerman said crews were called for a report of deck on fire and found 75 percent of the home engulfed in fire when they arrived.

"There wasn't really much we could do about it," he said about the house being virtually destroyed by the fire.

Firefighters from Auburn, Summit Station, Landingville and Schuylkill Haven battled the fire and cleared the scene about 6:30 a.m.

As crews were wrapping up in Lake Wynonah, firefighters from Pine Grove Township and surrounding communities were called just after 6 a.m. for a working fire at 6 Fidler's Court.

Robert Milligan, Pine Grove Township assistant fire chief, said flames destroyed a trailer home occupied by Kevin Corcoran, Payton Zerbe and a young child.

Milligan said the woman and child were home at the time and able to escape without injury. He said Zerbe smelled smoke and went to investigate, finding glowing coming from around an electrical outlet in a bathroom.

Milligan said the investigation determined the fire started in or around the wall outlet and is determined accidental.

One firefighter suffered a foot laceration and was treated at the scene by EMS personnel.

The trailer home was destroyed and Milligan said crews cleared the scene about 8:30 a.m.

Firefighters from Ravine, Suedberg, Pine Grove borough and Schuylkill Haven responded along with a tanker task force that brought water from an additional four fire companies.
